I’ve been away from my blog for sometime dealing with life’s challenges – some positive , some negative. As a writer, psychologist, and spiritual thinker I need to write as much as I need to breathe. It frees my mind, opens my heart, and nourishes my soul. If it touches you I am humbled and thankful. If not, I wish you peace, joy and love in your life.
The ongoing humanitarian crisis involving refugee children and their treatment reminds me sadly of the civil rights movement of the 1960’s. Children who have faced unimaginable horrors in their own countries through no fault of their own are now facing the hate-filled, screaming voices of some Americans. I remember seeing those same faces filled with hate on TV as young African American students tried to attend neighborhood schools, or sit at a lunch counter. It is terribly sad to think that we haven’t grown in tolerance over the past 50 years.
My heart weeps for them and for our country as we seem to have lost our souls. It seems like fear, ignorance and greed have fueled the hate being spewed. Oftentimes hateful people are fearful people, and fearful people are unable to see past differences with eyes of compassion and hearts of mercy. It is so terribly frustrating that so-called leaders are continuing the fear-mongering and helping to perpetuate this fear of “others”. Fear drives out love.
Love God, and Neighbor…Jesus’s greatest commandment to us. I continue to pray for our country that we not give into fear, greed, ignorance, prejudice, and self-righteousness. Please join me if you too want love, peace, tolerance, acceptance, mercy, generosity and truth to flourish.
Heavenly Father, open our minds, touch our hearts, and banish our fears. Help us to put your commandments into action for the good of all. We are all God’s children, made in His image.
